High Hopes for Haiti

Yesterday, I traveled to Port-au-Prince. Three months after the earthquake, the face of the city has not changed much. Maybe one-tenth of the debris has been removed.

The one remaining wall of the Cathedral is still standing but the collapsed National Palace is now being leveled.

The thousands of people living in public places have not changed in some areas but appear to be increased in others. Fortunately, portable toilets are provided in all of them and showers in some.

Debris from most government schools has been removed and large tents brought in by UNICEF serve as classrooms. At a short distance from the airport there are a very large number of tents set up but yet to be allocated.

The highlight of my trip remains the baptism of an infant and 32 students ranging from 9 to 13 years of age last Saturday in the courtyard of the Good Samaritan school. More to come later on that beautiful day and the moving ceremony.

May God bless you all.
