Anebi volunteering in Haiti

In the summer of 2011, Anebi, stood under the night sky in Haiti and put his experience into words. He had just spent a week helping run a summer camp for children at the Good Samaritans School in Saint Marc — the same school that used to welcome volunteers from the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Archbishop Spalding High School year after year, July after July.

What he wrote that night reads less like a trip reflection and more like a prayer. And today, we think it’s exactly what the moment calls for.

Why are we pulling this from the archive?

Because the camp Anebi helped run is still going. It has been carried forward by our school community itself — and this summer, the kids need you.

As you might know, it’s not safe for US volunteers to travel to Haiti. The mission trips that once brought dozens of visitors to Saint Marc every July are no more, but we pray that one day we will be able to go back.

But the children of Good Samaritans School are still there. They still show up. And this summer, their teachers, staff, and alumni are coming back to run camp themselves — because they remember what it meant to them. Anebi wrote about that spirit in 2011:

A Prayer for Haiti

Anebi with children in Haiti

As I stand here under the Haitian night sky writing this reflection, I already feel overwhelmed by my brief stay. Haiti is a beautiful country; God’s love is very much alive here and, with prayers and investment, this country will soar in every way possible. There is so much hope for Haiti. I have seen hope in every child that came to the camp that I was blessed enough to help run. The children have drive, talent and an optimistic outlook for their futures. The students, by the grace of God, will allow Haiti to achieve its full potential.

I leave Haiti with higher hopes and a deeper love. If faith is truly the combination of hope and love, then my faith has intensified. God bless Haiti. May God guide Haiti, and may those who can, use their God-given gifts to fulfill the hopes and dreams of God’s children in this beautiful nation.

This summer, we want to send 200 children to a camp filled with soccer, storytelling, dancing, arts & crafts, learning, and more. After everything these children have been through — the instability, uncertainty, and weight of a really hard year — camp is their chance to just be kids. To feel safe. To be seen.

And for many of them, it’s also their only reliable daily meal all summer long.

You may not be able to stand under that Haitian night sky this July — but you can make sure 200 children wake up to camp the next morning.

$27 sends a child in Haiti to summer camp for one week.
$108 sends a child to the entire camp!
