Meet LBS Alum: Josué
Josué was one of the first 65 kindergarten students at the Good Samaritan School and a member of CJMS’s first graduating class in 2015. By his own admission, he wasn’t always the easiest student to manage—bright, capable, but “turbulent,” often testing the limits of structure and discipline.
But what could have been a reason to fall through the cracks became part of his foundation instead.
At LBS and CJMS, Josué found more than an education—he found mentorship, opportunity, and belonging. The confidence he gained helped him complete medical school in Port-au-Prince and return to St. Marc, Haiti, as a general physician.

While at CJMS, Josué was involved in every aspect of school life, participating in music and sports, serving in leadership, and even becoming President of the School. Those experiences helped shape his direction, but it was Dr. Mortel’s example that left the deepest impression.
Seeing Dr. Mortel’s work motivated Josué to attend medical school to pursue a career as a physician after completing his education at CJMS. He graduated in 2024 and today has returned to St. Marc with his wife and young daughter to serve the same community that once supported him.
He now works in a private clinic in Saint Marc, and while ongoing instability in Haiti has created very real pressures to leave, Josué has made a deliberate choice to stay. The lessons he learned from Dr. Mortel and at CJMS have instilled in him a sense of responsibility that extends beyond gratitude–it shapes how he sees his role in the future of Haiti.
“If everyone leaves, who will try to change the situation?” Josué says. “We must bring our stones to build the future.”

Today, Josué carries not only his training, but the lived experience of being a child who was given a chance and someone who understands the importance of extending that same grace to others.
“Now, as a doctor, I particularly like the turbulent children since I was one,” Josué says.
His journey reflects the heart of the Mortel HHH mission: a child once supported becomes the adult who gives back, creating a cycle of impact that reaches far beyond a single generation.
