Les Bons Samaritans Library: Expanding Access to Education in Haiti
Inside the Les Bons Samaritans Library in Haiti
For many students at Les Bons Samaritans (LBS) in Saint-Marc, Haiti, the school library is their only regular access to books.
That reality makes the LBS Library incredibly important. It is more than a collection of shelves – it is a space where curiosity is sparked, learning is supported, and students are encouraged to imagine what their futures could hold.
A Collection That Supports Growth
The LBS Library is thoughtfully curated to meet students at every stage of their education. The collection includes classic children’s literature that builds a love of reading, English-language learning workbooks that strengthen communication skills, and advanced resources such as software engineering guides that introduce older students to new academic and career possibilities.
Each book represents opportunity, especially for students who may not have access to educational materials beyond the classroom.
Honoring Dr. Mortel’s Legacy
Among the books lining the shelves is one that holds special meaning – Dr. Mortel’s own book.
Its presence in the library is a lasting tribute to his belief in education as a powerful tool for empowerment. Every student who opens a book in the LBS Library is participating in the vision Dr. Mortel worked so passionately to build.
