Meet Our Students
Every child has a story worth sharing – and at Mortel High Hopes for Haiti, our students continue to inspire us every day. From discovering hidden talents to showing extraordinary dedication to their education, they remind us what hope and opportunity can achieve. Meet several of our remarkable students whose courage and curiosity brighten their classrooms and communities.

Meet Rose K.
Rose is headed into the first grade! While she loved all of the activities at camp this summer, the staff and other students were most surprised when Rose shared her hidden talent – a magnificent singing voice!
Rose is a shy and quiet child, but when a teacher passed her the microphone, she ended up surrounded by her peers like an artist on stage! With a little more encouragement, Rose gained enough confidence to sing a beautiful song at exposition night for all her friends and family to see.

Meet Amlensky C.
Amlensky is one of our 5th grade students! Every school day, he rides on a moto for an hour just to get to class. His favorite meal is rice with beans and squash. He loves math, and when he’s not studying, you’ll find him playing soccer or reading.
Students like Amlensky remind us why supporting education in Haiti is so important.

Meet Johnson D.
At 9 years old, Johnson is a bright and determined 4th grader at Les Bons Samaritains. His favorite color is red. When class is out, you’ll usually find him playing soccer with friends.
Each morning, Johnson hops on a moto for a 15-minute ride to school, excited to learn and grow. He dreams of one day becoming a doctor so he can help others in his community!
Fun fact: Johnson is an only child who truly shines when solving math problems or chasing the ball on the field.

Meet Leila D.
Leila is a 2025 graduate of our high school, Collège James M. Stine. She has 2 sisters and 2 brothers, and loves to read in her spare time.
Like many of her classmates Leila arrived to school by motorbike each morning, excited to get to her favorite subject: biology. She hopes to become a renowned doctor when she grows up, just like our own Dr. Mortel!
Fun fact: Leila is an avid volleyball player, and this past spring she participated in the CJMS Olympics tournament.

Meet Stecie L.
Stecie is in grade 10 at Collège James M. Stine, She lives with her brother and takes a 15-minute moto ride to school each morning.
Her favorite class is Haitian literature, and when she’s not studying, you’ll usually find her reading, watching TV shows, or playing volleyball (her favorite sport). She loves the color pink and her favorite meal is rice with leaf stew.
As for the future? Stecie dreams of becoming either a volleyball player or a flight attendant.

Meet Julmarthe A.
Julmarthe is a bright 6-year-old first grader at Les Bons Samaritains in Saint-Marc, Haiti. She lives with her sister and takes a 20-minute moto ride to school each day, when it isn’t raining.
Her favorite color is pink, and she loves reading, gym, and writing. When she’s not in class, Julmarthe enjoys jumping rope, playing games, watching TV, doing homework, and even helping with the dishes. Her favorite meal is rice with okra sauce.
And when she looks ahead, Julmarthe dreams of becoming a pediatrician!
