Understanding Agriculture in Haiti
Sustainable agriculture is essential in Haiti, but with a dry season that lasts for half the year, irrigation is a challenge.
This solar-powered water pump, located on the Mortel HHH farm behind College James M. Stine secondary school, provides a reliable water source for some new crops like beans and corn, even during periods of drought.
Field trips to our working farm give students hands-on learning experiences with lessons such as harvesting techniques and proper animal care.
Produce from our farm helps to support the nutrition program at Les Bons Samaritains and provides the local community with fresh, healthy food options!
So, what does farming look like in Haiti?
It looks like resilience, hard work, and hope.
At our farm in Saint Marc, agriculture isn’t just about growing food—it’s about growing opportunity. From tending crops to caring for animals, this land supports students, staff, and the wider community with fresh, local food – see here.
In a country where food scarcity is real, every harvest counts—and every student who visits the farm learns that sustainable farming can change lives.
